BEARDED dragon (pogona vitticeps) -Gino
Bearded dragons originate from the hot deserts of Australia where they are perfectly adapted to live in extreme conditions. Gino is an exceptionally well coloured bearded dragon who really does love people. He is always keen to come out to say hello and loves exploring the garden in the summer!
WOMA PYTHONS (Aspidites Ramsayi) - BOB AND BINDI
Woma Pythons originate from the Australian deserts where they feed on other reptiles and small mammals. They are well suited to digging in the sand and soil and have some amazing adaptations that make them different from all other pythons. Bob and Bindi came to Really Wild Learning when they were just one year old and immediately charmed us with their fantastic personalities. These snakes are very calm and enjoy being handled. They are extremely curious and seem to spend as much time watching us as we spend watching them!
WHITES TREE FROG (LiTORIA CAERULEA) - SMILEY
Whites tree frogs originate from the Australian and Indonesian rain forests. They are fantastic amphibians who spend a lot of their time up trees. Smiley is a super happy fellow who spends a great deal of time smiling (hence the name) but also enjoys his food!
CRESTED GECKO (Correlophus ciliates) - Pepper
Crested Geckos originate from New Caledonia and were thought to be extinct until they were rediscovered on some small islands in the late 1990's. These guys are well suited to life up in the trees where they eat insects and some fruit and pollen. Pepper is a very relaxed gecko who likes to show off his jumping ability and technique for cleaning his own eyeballs!
Leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) - Norman and Norma
Leopard geckos originate from Asia, Pakistan and Northern India. They have great character and are well suited to their natural habitat. Norman and Norma were obtained by director Kim Insull as a 12 year old boy. They are now 23 years old which must be a record and are still healthy and happy which is fantastic. We also have some of their youngsters.
Pueblan Milksnake (LAmpropeltis triangulum Cambelli) - Elsa and KristoFF
Milk snakes are one of the most colourful snakes in the world. They originate from North and Central America where they spend their time avoiding predators. Elsa and Kristoff are very friendly and enjoy exploring, they have small heads which are perfect for trying to escape their enclosure!
bumblebee poison dart frog (Dendrobates leucomelas) - superman, batman and wonderwoman
These stunning dart frogs are exactly the type of animal we think about when talking about a rainforest. These bold little frogs protect themselves from predators by concentrating poison from ants in their skin, however in captivity they are completely harmless but retain their bold colours. These superheros of the rainforest respond to sounds and come to the front of their vivarium when they hear voices as they think it means food. We do not bring these frogs to all events as they are too delicate to handle.
Western hognose (heterodon nasicus) - changing colours
Western Hognose are fantastic little snakes that originate from North America. They have cute upturned noses that they use to dig in the wild. They predominately feed on frogs and toads in the wild although they eat small mice in captivity. These snakes grow to a similar size to the European Adder, the only venomous snake we have in the UK. We have several of these snakes including the famous Changing Colours who is an albino, lacking any black pigment.
Royal python's (python Regius) - Lily & stoney
Royal python's originate from the Africa where they spend a great deal of time in underground burrows. Lily was originally given to Really Wild Learning because her owner could not get her to eat. In the right environment she quickly started to feed and is now a happy healthy girl. Stoney has big spurs which look like claws near his tail, these are in fact the evolutionary remnants of hind legs!
blue poison Dart frog (Dendrobates tinctorius Azureus) - Brave & Strong
The Azureus poison dart frog has to be one of the most beautiful frogs in the world. Blue is a very rare colour in the natural world so these guys are incredible to watch. These frogs are completely harmless in captivity but still demonstrate some amazing animal behaviour, for example the eggs are laid out of water and the male frog caries each tadpole on his back to water when they hatch. They originate from the rainforests of South America.
INVERTEBRATES
We really do have too many invertebrates to name. They include cockroaches, giant african land snails, spiders, stick insects, praying mantids and scorpions. There is so much to learn about these creatures and what a fantastic job they do for us and every ecosystem they inhabit.
