- The are 3567 species of snakes worldwide. Only 600 of these are venomous, although those that potentially contain fatal venom is very low indeed.
- Snakes have adapted to live in every continent apart from Antarctica. They are also not found in Ireland or New Zealand.
- The worlds smallest snake is the Barbados thread snake (Leptotyphhlops carlae) which grows to just 10 cm.
- The worlds biggest snake can be broken into two categories, longest and heaviest. The longest snake is the Reticulated python (Python reticules) that can reach a length of around 8.7 m (29 ft). The South American Green Anoconda (Eunectes murinus) can grow to a weight of about 550 pounds (227 kilograms).
- Some snakes lay eggs whilst others have live young.
- Snake venom has many uses in modern medicine. It has been used to create cancer treatment due to its effect on tumours and has antibacterial and painkilling properties. It has also been used to reduce the effects of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's as well as stroke and brain injuries.
